Dr Elly Quinlan & Meg Glachan - Making Psychological Reports Clear, Accessible and Useful (15 Sep 2026)

Join us on 15 September 2026, 12.15pm (AEDT) for a 90-minute live workshop hosted by the Australian Educational and Developmental Psychology Association. While the session will be recorded, participants are strongly encouraged to attend live.

Workshop description: Psychological reports are intended to support understanding and inform meaningful action, yet they are not always written in ways that meet the needs of the people who receive them. This workshop explores how psychological reports can become clearer, more accessible, and genuinely useful. Drawing on research and consumer perspectives, including what parents, teachers, and other report recipients value, we will examine common barriers to report accessibility and use. Participants will leave with practical strategies for improving the language, structure, presentation, and usefulness of their own reports.

About the presenters

Dr Elly Quinlan is an educational and developmental psychologist and Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Tasmania. She enjoys psychological assessment and has been on an ongoing professional and research journey to improve the clarity, accessibility, and practical usefulness of her own reports. Her broader interests include ethics, neurodivergence, and experiences of uncertainty. She also works as a witness intermediary, supporting children and adults with communication needs during police interviews and court proceedings.

Meg Glachan is an early career generally registered psychologist and PhD candidate at the University of Tasmania. Her research focuses on improving the accessibility, readability, and usefulness of psychological assessment reports, with a particular interest in health literacy, plain language, and strengths-based reporting. Meg also works clinically with children, young people, and families, bringing a practical perspective to her research and professional presentations.

Are you an educational and developmental psychology registrar looking to elevate your professional skills? The Australian Educational and Developmental Psychology Association (AEDPA) has tailored an online Group Supervision Registrar Program just for you. Guided by board-approved supervisors with ample experience, this program includes 12 monthly, 1-hour teleconferencing sessions for a non-refundable upfront cost of $499. Designed to foster learning in an intimate group setting, the program is capped at just 8 participants. To qualify, you'll need to have a primary supervisor approved by AHPRA and hold a "Member" status within AEDPA.

The supervisor for these sessions is Sanchana Venkatesh.

The program will start on the 24 April 2026 at 1pm. Most sessions will run monthly from this date forward, at a regular 1pm time slot. Once the group is finalised, collaboration surrounding future session times will occur between the supervisor and the supervisees.

Early Career Check-In

For AEDPA members in their first year out

You've graduated. You're registered, or nearly there. And somewhere between finishing study and finding your feet, you've probably realised how much of this profession you learn on the job - often alone.

This is a space to not be alone with it.

The Early Career Check-In is a free, members-only session for psychologists who've graduated in the last six to twelve months. It's a chance to sit with people at exactly your stage and talk honestly about how the first year or so is actually going.

What to expect

The session will open with a short, informal presentation to get us started - a bit of grounding or a prompt to spark thinking - but the heart of it is facilitated reflection and discussion. This is your space to talk, not a session to sit back and be lectured at.

We'll make time for:

Reflecting on the first year: What's surprised you, what's stretched you, what you know now that you wish you'd known then.
Sharing what's working: The practical tips, small wins, and hard-won lessons that are easier to pass on than to figure out from scratch.
Asking the questions you're still sitting with: The things you're unsure about, the bits nobody quite prepared you for, the "is it just me?" questions. Chances are it's not just you.
Talking through the registrar program: If you've started, bring your questions. If you haven't begun yet, come and hear from those who have. Either way, you'll leave knowing more than you came with.

Why come

The move from student to practitioner is one of the biggest transitions in this profession, and it's often the loneliest. Peer connection in these early years does real work - it builds confidence, reduces isolation, and reminds you that the uncertainty you're feeling is shared, not a sign you're doing it wrong.

You don't need to bring anything or prepare a thing. You just need to show up.

Come to talk. Come to listen. Come to feel a little less like you're doing this on your own.

What's shared stays here. You're always welcome to speak or simply listen.
